It’s now March out here, and we have a big month coming up at Shooting Touch. We will have our International Women’s Day Tournament coming up, and it’s been busy to get all of the kids ready for that. Although I’ve also found some time to have some fun out here.
The day after the OKC vs Warriors game I saw the highlights and I knew I absolutely had to show the kids that game. I was so excited to show such a great game with the Rwink kids. To have these kids witness the greatness of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Russell Westbrook.
We had the game shown on the big projector and I got some snacks for the kids. At first, they were only marginally interested, especially in the minutes that Steph Curry was out. However, when the game was coming down to the wire they were so into it.
That game finished regulation with Andre Igudola shooting free throws to tie the game with no time left. They were absolutely going crazy. Then the overtime happened, and they were screaming for a good 10 minutes after Steph Curry made the game winner.
Steph Curry’s Game Winning Shot
Needless to say, there has been a number of kids shooting from 30+ feet screaming CURRY during the last week of practice.
On one hand I have really wanted to watch some more NBA games this season, and it has been weird having a whole year away from watching sports even though I always check the scores. On the other hand, the few games that I have showed the kids has been so much fun, some of the best bonding moments with them just goofing around, and spreading the love of basketball.
On the court, we have been progressing along in our health curriculum, and we recently did a fun project with the kids. We showed them how to build a DIY hand washing station called a Tippy Tappy. Again it was a fun project to have them work on, and help make sure they put into practice the sanitation lessons we have been teaching them. Hopefully, some of them will build these hand washing stations at their own homes in the future.
Finally, I’ve had some fun away from Rwanda. Lisanne’s brother has been visiting for the last 3 weeks, and that has given us an excuse to travel a bit.
The Shooting Touch Rwanda team made it out to Kampala the capital of Uganda. It is interesting seeing the differences between the neighboring countries. There were some good differences, the food is so much better compared to Rwanda which is one thing I’m always missing. However, when it comes down to it I am very thankful to be in Rwanda. I think I realized how safe the country is, how good some of the government policies are like always making sure moto passengers have helmets, or how much safer the roads are.
The highlight of the Uganda trip was by far going white water rafting on the Nile river. This was something I had been wanting to do ever since Lisanne told me she did it last year. It was so fun taking on some grade 5 rapids. I think it was also a great team bonding experience as we all had to paddle together, and listen to all of the instructions to make sure we wouldn’t flip the boat.
